Personal Training for Runners

Perfect Fit Personal Training offers truly bespoke training plans for runners and endurance athletes.

Whether you're a novice embarking on your first 5k or an experienced endurance runner or triathlete; whether you want a fully hands-on training experience, or simply some guidance to help you on your way, Robby Elson can help.

Based on your previous training and performances, I will help you focus on areas with room for improvement – anything from hydration and nutrition leading up to and including race day, to pacing, speed work, long runs, core strength and running form – and devise a realistic training plan to help you meet your goals.

One-to-One personal training sessions allow me to oversee aspects of your training first-hand and address any problems and questions as they arise. If you’re preparing for a particularly long race – especially if it’s a marathon or more – you will undertake the vast majority of your training on your own. However, I can usually accompany you on any one of your week's training runs that you feel needs most attention – be it a long slow distance run, an interval session or a tempo run.

The one-to-one sessions are adapted to your specific needs, which will change as you move through your training plan towards race day. However, they may include speed work, interval sessions, plyometrics and core conditioning. The latter is often ignored by runners, at their peril. Core strength has a significant effect on running form and posture which, if poor, leaves runners highly exposed to injury, particularly so in races: as your body tires, your form collapses, you begin to hurt and you have to work harder to run slower!

Training plans for events from the 5k to 100 miles, for beginners to elites, are available all over the web. While they are undoubtedly useful, they do not take into account the fact that everybody is unique and that individuals respond to training in different ways. A Personal Trainer can ensure you're doing the right things at the right times for you.

If you are training for a particular running event, please contact me to book a special ‘runners’ package’. This includes a full training plan, one-to-one weekly strength and conditioning sessions and ongoing massage to make sure you make the start line in the best condition possible. Ideally this package runs for a minimum of 12 weeks. However, if you find you've signed up for a race, you've put off your training, and now there's just a few weeks to go and you're starting to panic, give me a call. You may be surprised at what we can achieve together in a short space of time!

Many runners prefer to take control of their own training – one of the appeals of running, after all, is that it fits around busy schedules; you can go for a run anytime and anywhere. However, it’s often difficult to know whether you are doing enough (or too much!); or whether what you are doing is the right sort of training at the right time.

Perfect PT offers bespoke training solutions to fit your needs.

Following an interview via phone, email, or in person, to establish your goals and current training regime I can help you devise a bespoke training plan between 6 and 12 weeks long.

Your progress is monitored via regular phone and/or email consultations and your training plan updated accordingly.

Once you reach the end of your training plan, you have the choice to continue with another of between 6 and 12 weeks in length. While the goal of any training plan is progression, it will also include periods of active rest and recuperation in order to avoid over-training.
